Why use Health and Safety in your marketing material?

You have a marketing plan. And you have a great Health and Safety system. Your team knows about it (and hopefully embrace it as part of their job descriptions). Your clients may know you practice great health and safety and have experienced the benefits. But do your potential clients know how much you care about your people including your existing clients?

‘Why Choose Us’ is a phrase often used on websites and in marketing material. We see ‘choose us’ reasons such as:

  • Exceptional Customer Service
  • Quality Products
  • On Time
  • Dependable
  • Affordable
  • Team Approach
  • Satisfaction Guaranteed

…and many more.

Promoting the fact you have a robust Health and Safety Management System can have an influential effect on helping a potential client decide to choose you.

Your clients want to feel safe, cared for and as important as your own staff. They too likely have families to get home to at the end of the day. You can be all of those things above but if you can’t achieve that then why should they want to do business with you?

And at this point in time, they might not realise this is one of their needs when looking for a supplier, product or contractor. Afterall, health and safety in New Zealand is still not being taken as seriously as it should be but ultimately, we all want to feel, and be safe on the job, a worksite or wherever we are.

So you might need to put it in front of them. Get your target market to realise that you really do care and are proud to conduct your whole business this way. There doesn’t seem to be many other businesses doing this at present. Looking through a building and construction newspaper style publication recently, I counted 324 advertisements from mainly builders, suppliers and contractors. All told me what they sold or did but only one out of this 324 told me their business was about ‘Safety First’. This company provided cranes, hiabs and transport along with engineering and logistic consultancy. If I needed any of those services, I would be reassured that their equipment was in top condition and that their consultancy covered health and safety processes in my project.

Another example is of a national franchise cleaning company who mention their approach to health and safety in their radio advertising (yet they still haven’t mentioned it on their website).

It is clear that currently you are likely to stand out by featuring the importance of health and safety in your organisation. Updating your website, print material, signage and social media platforms with key messages could help get new clients notice you and pick up the phone.

Remember, it’s not about following the legislation, meeting compliance, or keeping your records straight. It’s all about people. Your care for everyone within the whole company through to service delivery and ultimately a very satisfied client. So why not tell the world? It could be your ‘cherry on the top’.
