June 2009It's amazing the places ideas for Safety Awareness can come from. Whilst supervising children at a school road patrol, one of the instructions given to the children when they have the signs out, is for the person on the opposite side of the road from the pedestrians to call "check" loudly. What has been interesting has been trying to get the children to understand that there is in fact an action that goes with the word check...how often does similar occurrence happen in your workplace? |

Stay at Work service starts on 1 July 2009 From 1 July 2009, ACC will begin using a new early intervention vocational rehabilitation service, Stay at Work, which is designed to help people get back to work safely and as soon as possible following injury. This will replace the current Graduated Return to Work service. For more....... |

KiwiRail took out the Supreme award at the NZ Workplace Health and Safety Awards this year. One of their initiatives was using an outside facilitator to conduct focus groups with employees that identified potential barriers and then worked on ways to overcome these. Winners of other categories included: Paper Reclaim, Metrowaste, PJ and MJ Olsen and Skyline Harvesting, and Northern Gateway Alliance. To see the whole list including finalists........ |

Fingerless men end up in same ward
NINEMSN 22 May
Two New Zealand men who each lost four fingers in separate workplace accidents on the same day have ended up in the same hospital ward. A 20-year-old man working in the Wharerata Forest on the North Island's east coast near Gisborne, had four fingers on his right hand severed on Thursday when a steel cable pulled his hand into a pulley. Employers won't have to pay reparations for lost wages

The no-fault ACC scheme will remain intact and employers can breathe a sigh of relief after the Supreme Court quashed earlier decisions allowing reparations in sentencing.The ACC scheme was under-threat all because an untethered mattress fell from a trailer in Christchurch.
