June 2009

It's amazing the places ideas for Safety Awareness can come from. Whilst supervising children at a school road patrol, one of the instructions given to the children when they have the signs out, is for the person on the opposite side of the road from the pedestrians to call "check" loudly. What has been interesting has been trying to get the children to understand that there is in fact an action that goes with the word check...how often does similar occurrence happen in your workplace?

Men's health - why is it important?

New Zealand men can make a difference to their health, for themselves and for their families.

    Facts about men's health.

    • Men are less likely to visit a health professional so they may miss out on chances to improve their health and prevent illness.
    • Delaying seeking medical advice can also sometimes turn a relatively minor health problem into a more serious concern.

Why have an International Men's Health Week:

    • Male life expectancy is unnecessarily low.
    • Reported male-specific diseases are increasing (especially prostate and testicular cancers)
    • Men have higher risk of suicide and yet male depression remains under-diagnosed and under-treated
    • Health services have been slow to respond to men's health needs and little has been done to encourage and enable men to access services faster and more efficiently

"Don't worry about my health... never felt better." "Sure, I'll fix that Drs appointment for tomorrow."
